The OM 500 engine series is a series of diesel engines from Mercedes-Benz with 6 or 8 cylinders in a V arrangement, which was introduced in 1996 as the successor to the OM 400 series. The new engine family uses a common kit for central components (e.g. pistons , connecting rods, etc.). The different engine outputs are generated almost exclusively by differences in the respective software in the engine control unit . Mechanically, the OM 500 series is designed for a mileage of one million kilometers. The OM 500 series was replaced by the OM 47x series .
