Mercedes Bresso (born July 12, 1944 in San Remo ) is an Italian politician and member of the European Parliament . She is a member of the center-left Partito Democratico .

Career

Bresso was born in Sanremo , Province of Imperia in Liguria , in 1944 .

In 1969 she received her doctorate in economics ; since 1973 she has been a professor at the Economics Institute at the Faculty of Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Turin .

From 1989 until its dissolution in 2008 Bresso was an active member of the Democratici di Sinistra , since then she has been active in the Partito Democratico . From 1985 to 1995 she was Regional Minister for Construction and Urban Planning ( Assessore Regionale per la Pianificazione Territoriale ) in the Piedmontese regional government , and from 1995 to 2004 she was President of the Province of Turin .

Since 2002 she has been Deputy Chairwoman of the AICCRE; from 2000 to 2004 she was chairman of the World Federation of United Cities and from 2004 to 2005 co-founder and chairman of the organization Cités et Gouvernements locaux Uni .

From April 2005 to October 2008 she was President of the Union of European Federalists (UEF) (in Germany: Europa-Union Deutschland ). He was succeeded by Andrew Duff .

In February 2010 she was elected first President of the Committee of the Regions. Her two and a half year term ended in August 2012.

In May 2014 she was re-elected to the European Parliament.
