Mercedes Marín Del Solar
Mercedes Marín Del Solar (born September 11, 1804 in Santiago de Chile , † December 21, 1866 there ) was a Chilean author.
She was the daughter of Gaspar Marin, secretary of the first government junta in Chile , and Luisa Recabarren. She received an unusual education for the time and circumstances. In 1830 she married the writer José María del Solar, who showed understanding for her cultural ambitions. She campaigned for an education system that should offer women the same educational opportunities as men.
Mercedes was Chile's first major femme de lettres . Her impressive funeral "Canto Fúnebre a la Muerte de Don Diego Portales" appeared anonymously in the magazine "El Araucano" in 1837. She received applause for this from her male colleagues. Her lyrical oeuvre, mainly sonnets under classical influence , was edited by her son Enrique del Solar.
