After a military coup in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea , the world is threatened with nuclear war. After the failed attempt by special forces to incapacitate the North Korean nuclear weapons, various parties (such as South Korea and China) invade the country, which in turn starts a countdown, at the end of which Seoul is to be the target of nuclear missiles. In the midst of this scenario, the military hire the mercenary organization Executive Operations to save the situation.

The game has several endings, but the affiliation of North Korea to the People's Republic of China is canonical.

Gameplay

The player controls a mercenary in a third person perspective through a North Korean crisis area. He can do this on foot or on board a wide variety of vehicles. The aim of the game is to neutralize wanted people (kill or take prisoner). Each target person is represented by a playing card from a 52 hand. The game is divided into four sections that correspond to the colors of the hand of cards. By securing targets, the player must achieve a certain level of clarification in order to unlock the so-called ace mission. In this one tries in a smaller, isolated part of the game world to neutralize the person who represents the ace of the color in whose game segment the player is currently located. The cards of clubs are civilians and for the most part officials of the former, overthrown government, the cards of diamonds are important military personnel, the cards of hearts are scientists (especially nuclear researchers) and the deck of spades are the personal bodyguards and highest subordinates of the antagonist General Choi Song ( Ace of spades). After completing the ace mission, the next card color is unlocked (and the game world-related influences of the old ones disappear, such as unsecured number cards and the bunkers and vehicles belonging to their environment). Upon completing the last assignment in which the player killed or imprisoned General Song, you will receive $ 100 million and the game will start over. At first you play in the southern ( DMZ to Pyongyang ) and for the second half of the game in the northern province ( Taechon to Dandong , People's Republic of China ).

assignments

In Mercenaries, each side gives the player three orders for each card color. To accept an order, you go to the headquarters of the respective site, where you are then informed about the order. At the beginning of each conversation, the client says a specific saying that varies with the current attitude of the side towards the player and the current card color. The next step is an explanation of the mission. Then there are another three “sayings” that are said with a time lag (vary from order to order). During the entire conversation you can leave the room and thus reject the order or go to the representative of the client's representative, speak to him and start the order.

At the end of an order you get your wages transferred, which you can increase with secondary goals. The player can use the money to purchase weapons and vehicles, some of which are dropped directly by parachute.

The last orders of all sides have to do with the pursuit of a high card (AN always offers the ace order, a certain clarification is required, which is achieved by the capture / liquidation of part of the number / picture cards).

Others

The name of the mercenary organization Executive Operations [ExOps] is very reminiscent of the private security and military company Executive Outcomes [EO]. The ExOps company emblem, like Executive Outcome, has a chess game knight as heraldic animal. In 1999, Executive Outcome was dissolved. There is also a map in the game that shows the Propaganda Village. In this village all houses are erected with steel girders and are completely empty.
