The Merck Index is a reference work for the properties of the most important drugs , chemicals , drugs and biochemicals. The current edition contains more than 10,000 monographs on individual substances or classes of active substances . The appendix contains monographs on name reactions in organic chemistry. It has been published since 1889 by Merck & Co., Inc. , then a subsidiary of E. Merck (now Merck KGaA ). The online version of the index has been published by the Royal Society of Chemistry since 2012 .
The 15th edition was published in April 2013 ( ISBN 978-1849736701 ), which is also available as a paid offer on the Internet.

Each monograph in the Merck Index typically contains:

  • the CAS number
  • alternative names, synonyms, common names and the IUPAC designation
  • Molecular and structural formula
  • Molar mass
  • Elemental composition in% (two decimal places)
  • a description of the appearance of the substance
  • Melting point or boiling point
  • Solubility in the main solvents
  • Synthesis references
  • the therapeutic categories
