Merlin (cat)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Merlin (born in 2002 or 2003) is a house cat from Torquay . Since 2015, the black and white cat holds the record for the loudest purr according to Guinness World Records .

Life

Merlin comes from an animal rescue station in Kingkerswell and was taken in by owner Tracy Westwood. He has lived in Torquay since then and was noticed early on by his very loud purring. Westwood turned to local newspapers, which measured the cat's purr to be around 100 decibels . A normal cat purrs at a volume of 25 decibels. The cat was then recorded as a guest on Channel 5 's Cats Make You Laugh Out Loud 2 , which also featured Lil Bub . A team from the Guinness Book of Records came to the recordings and measured the volume again. With a total of 67.8 decibels, Merlin set the previous record (67.68 dB) from Smoky from Pitsford. The cat reacts primarily to food in front of it. A can of tuna was used in the successful world record attempt.

The new record was reported around the world.
