The Mermaid's chair

The Mermaid's chair is located in St. Senara's Church in Zennor , Cornwall, which is over 1,000 years old . The mermaid's armchair is a carving that was on the old headboard of a bench that was made into the armchair. He is said to be around 600 years old. The mermaid holds a mirror in one hand and a comb in the other, symbols that also appear on Pictish symbol stones . She bears a certain resemblance to Aphrodite - like the mermaid, the Greek goddess of love also came from the sea.

Legend

Legend tells of Mathew Trewella, a handsome young man who sang hymns in church. A mermaid who, according to legend, lived in a nearby cove was delighted with his voice. She came into the church and lured Mathew to the cove at Pendover Cave , now called Mermaid's Cove , where he followed her into the waves and was never seen again. On mild summer nights you should hear both singing in the waves.

The Mermaid chair is also a novel by Sue Monk Kidd .
