The married Jessie Sullivan has had a bad relationship with her religiously committed mother Nelle since her father died. One day she learns that Nelle mutilated herself, she chopped off a finger. Sullivan travels to her hometown to look after her mother, Nelle. There she meets the friar Thomas, with whom she falls in love. She also learns the truth about her past.

Reviews

Cinema magazine wrote that the film was a "quacked self-discovery boring" . The director has a good reputation, but the "pseudo-profound Schmonzette" seems like "the transatlantic variant of a Rosamunde Pilcher film" . The plot ripples along; Basinger stands out mainly "through her penetrating suffering expression" .
