Elinor Anne Harvie (born April 7, 1965 in Belleville , Ontario , Canada ) is a Canadian actress , stand-up comedian and director . Harvie was best known internationally for her role as Morticia Addams in the television series The New Addams Family .

Life

Harvie was born in 1965 to a Canadian Forces pilot and teacher. According to her own statement, she made the decision to become an actress at the age of three or four. She grew up in Saskatchewan and Manitoba and attended the University of Winnipeg . After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies, she moved to Vancouver , where she attended the Vancouver Playhouse Acting School. She discovered improvisational theater for herself and joined the Vancouver Theater Sports League. Harvie won the Just for Laughs Improv Tournament in 1995, and in 1998 she was nominated for The Improv Comedy Olympics for the Gemini Award .

Harvie played a few minor roles in television series and films in the 1990s, before her international breakthrough with the lead role of Morticia Addams in The New Addams Family . For this role she received a Leo Award in 2000 in the category "Best Performance in a Music, Comedy or Variety Show or Series". In addition to acting, Harvie works as a stand-up comedian.

In 2017, Harvie released her first directorial work with the short film Scattered . The film has been shown at various festivals such as the NSI Online Short Film Festival 2017 and the Nevada Womens Film Fest 2018 and has received multiple awards. Telefilm Canada screened Scattered as part of the Canada: Not Short on Talent at Cannes program at the 2017 Cannes International Film Festival .

Ellie Harvie lives in White Rock in the Canadian province of British Columbia .
