Bratz is a competing product for Mattel's Barbie dolls produced by MGA Entertainment, Inc. , which was also introduced in Germany after its success in English-speaking countries. The name "Bratz" is derived from the English word brats , which means "brat" or "brat".

In the field of fashion dolls, the products have sold 150 million copies worldwide and have a 40% market share.

A comic series of the same name was already running on Super RTL .

The characters

For each doll, a character was designed that should appeal to girls, but is also used in the Bratz films and the associated series.

  • Yasmin: She's the Latina of the clique nicknamed "Little Princess".
  • Sasha: She's the African American nicknamed "Sugar Doll". She is the dancer of the group and the speci in music.
  • Jade: She's the Asian at the Bratz. Because she discovers the best and cheapest boutiques on her forays through the shopping malls, her nickname is "Tiger". She is a chemistry fan. In the film Bratz4Real she is portrayed as a half-Asian. There she has a Japanese mother and a white father.
  • Cloe: Your nickname is "Angel". She is very creative and a born designer. In the film, she is of Russian descent.

In addition to these main characters, there are other characters, including the boyz , pets ( Bratz Petz ) and ponies ( Bratz Ponyz ). All figures are also available as Kidz and Babyz .

The series

In the animated series, the four girls Sasha, Yasmin, Cloe and Jade found a lifestyle magazine, as the city's existing magazine only shows the outdated style of its editor-in-chief. She wears only pink with lots of bows and other kitsch (a swipe at Barbie).

The Bratz are constantly sabotaged and annoyed by the assistants of the competition (twins who are just as blonde and pink as their boss, but a lot more stupid and nasty). They experience some adventures.

The fashions and themes of the individual episodes are available as dolls. For example the “Bratz Rock Angelz”, when the Bratz had to go backstage as rock stars in one episode.

The movies

There are theme sets for some animated films, similar to Barbie with fairy tales and My Scene dolls, which come with a DVD or VHS cassette. Of these, the following have been published in Germany so far:

  • Bratz the Video - Starrin '& Stylin'
  • Bratz - Rock Angelz
  • Bratz - Passion for Fashion Diamondz
  • Bratz - Rock'n Princess
  • Bratz - Genius Magic
  • Bratz - Fashion Pixiez
  • Bratz - Babyz Bratz movie
  • Bratz - Super Babyz
  • Bratz - Kidz Sleepover Adventure
  • Bratz - styling stars

Actual filming

There is also the feature film Bratz the Movie . In the film, the girls, who have been friends for ages, are new to high school and are separated by the scheming Meredith. This is used to everyone in the cliques with the same interests. So Jade joins the chemistry or science club and Cloe joins the soccer team (unlike the dolls, here she is more of an athlete than a designer).

Sasha is with the cheerleaders. With her talent and passion as a singer and actress, Yasmin would actually be suitable for the drama group if it weren't for her stage fright. As a result, Yasmin notices that she and the others have grown apart and no longer have time for each other. This will of course be remedied in the course of the film and the stage fright and Meredith's crazy clique will be defeated. The main roles in the film are Nathalia Ramos as Yasmin, Janel Parrish as Jade, Logan Browning as Sasha, Skyler Shaye as Cloe, Chelsea Staub as Meredith Baxter Dimly, Lainie Kazan as Bubbie, Malese Jow as Quinn, Anneliese van der Pol as Avery, Stephen Lunsford as Cameron, Ian Nelson as Dylan and Jon Voight as Principal Dimly.

criticism

Critics (e.g. the New York Times ) criticize the Bratz dolls as being even more “sexualizing” than Barbie and as the doll-turned version by Paris Hilton & Co for girls of puppet theater age.
