action
Year after year, Bob Wallace can't wait for the Christmas season to approach. Just in time for December 1st, he begins to decorate his house. Wallace desperately wants the most festively decorated and lighted house in town. But one day a new neighbor moves in next door and this Stu Jone seems to want to dispute this rank. To her great surprise, Wallace and Jone already knew each other from school and then one day fell out. Until today they had never spoken to each other again. While the women recommend reconciliation to their husbands after so many years, the two do not even think about it. So begins a fierce contest, because one wants to outdo the other. There are hardly any vacancies in the house or in the front yard. There are figures everywhere and something is added every day. With the massive Christmas decorations, the two opponents neglected the safety regulations a little and are now getting into trouble with the city's fire protection officer. This calls for a partial dismantling of the fairy lights, as well as the removal of figures that represent a source of accidents.
Wallace and Jone begin to bet against each other who will win the most beautiful Christmas decoration. Her wives, who had previously treated each other sensibly, are now beginning to hate each other too. Only Wallace's daughter and Jones' son get along well, which of course is another thorn in the side of the fathers. Despite all the fanaticism, the fathers seem to have forgotten the real meaning of Christmas. A letter for their neighbor, an elderly lady, is accidentally thrown at the Wallaces' premises and they learn that she has large tax debts and that she will soon no longer be able to afford her house. It made Bob Wallace so rethinking that he made up with Stu Jones and buried the hatchet. But since they cannot help the neighbor with money because they have spent all their savings on Christmas decorations, they clear away some of their house decorations and use them to decorate the house of the old lady, who then wins the city's competition. But not because it is the most magnificent, but the house that reflects the true Christmas spirit. The award goes to Lesley McKane, with which she can now pay her debts and keep her house.
