from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mes Buachalla , also Mess Búachalla ("foundling of the cowherd") is the name of a legendary figure from the Ulster cycle of the Celtic mythology of Ireland .

In the story Togail Bruidne Da Derga ("The Destruction of the Hall Da Dergas"), Mes Buachalla is named as the mother of King Conaire Mór and wife of Etarscél . Here she is the daughter of Hochkönig Eochaid Fedlech and Étain .

According to the legend Tochmarc Étaíne ("The courtship for Étaín"), she is said to be the daughter of Hochkönig Eochaid Airem , Eochaid Fedlech's brother, with his own daughter Ésa, whom he considers his wife Étain. Because of this accidental incest, he wants to have mother and child killed, but they find refuge with a shepherd and his wife. Since Mes Buachalla is growing into a beauty, the Hochkönig Etarscél takes her as his wife. She is said to have received her son Conaire Mór through a night of love with a stranger who flew into her bedchamber in the form of a bird during the night; Etarscél ignorantly considers him to be his own son.
