Mesehti was the “ mayor ” and “head of the priesthood ” in Assiut at the beginning of the Middle Kingdom (around 2000 BC) in ancient Egypt .

Row of figures with Egyptian soldiers

Mesehti is only known from his grave equipment, which was found during illegal excavations in Assiut at the end of the 19th century. The grave was apparently untouched. The gifts were mainly sold to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo .

The grave contained two large wooden coffins. They were decorated mainly on the inside with coffin texts and are considered to be one of the most important sources for this genre of religious texts. The underside of the lid shows a list of deans .

In the grave there was once a number of model figures made of wood, as are typical for burials in the Middle Kingdom. As a special feature, the grave contained a set of figures with Nubian and one with Egyptian soldiers. The Nubians are marked dark-skinned, wear a red loincloth and a bow and arrow. The Egyptians appear as spear-bearers with light loincloths, spears and shields. The figures vary in size, so they should probably represent individuals .
