Message in a Bottle is a song by The Police from 1979. It was released on September 21, 1979 as the first single from the second studio album Reggatta de Blanc . The song was written by Sting and is about a person who - figuratively - is stranded on an island and sends a message in a bottle looking for love. The reggae- influenced rock ballad also contains influences from new wave and post-punk .

Emergence

The song was produced by Nigel Gray and The Police. Guitarist Andy Summers said the riff on the piece originally appeared on another song by the band. During the band's first US tour, however, it was revised, so that Message in a Bottle was created.

reception

The piece was the first of five number one singles for the band in the UK . In Ireland and Spain reached Message in a Bottle number one. In Germany the song reached number 35 in the charts and in Austria number 24. Rolling Stone magazine put the piece at number 65 in its “100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time”. The Police also played the song at the Live Earth concert in 2007.
