Mestrius Martinus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mestrius Martinus was a Roman painter who worked in the Dacian city of Apulum , today's Alba Iulia in Romania, in the 2nd or 3rd century .

He is known from an inscription found in Apulum, in which he is named as a painter and appears as the donor of a fanum for the dominae . The Dominae are collective deities derived from the nickname Domina , which can possibly be identified with the Matronae . The inscription reads:

Mestrius Mar [t] inus
pictor constituit
per salute sua et
suorum
fanum Dominar [um]

Because of its name, it is believed that Mestrius Martinus was a Roman citizen of Celtic descent who was of northern Italian origin.
