Meta Tracker (short Tracker ) is a free software system for so-called desktop search for Unix-like operating systems such as Linux . It is characterized by efficient use of system resources and a comparatively high working speed and has few dependencies.

It consists of a ( SQL ) database, indexer (the trackerd daemon ) and search application (command line program tracker-search and GTK + -based graphical user interface called tracker-search-tool). Applications can access the services of Tracker via a programming interface . It is written in the C programming language and adheres to the standards of freedesktop.org .

It is integrated as a standard system into the Gnome desktop environment , but no special Gnome software (apart from the GLib dependency). Gnome's standard file manager Nautilus integrates Tracker's functionality from version 2.13.4, but also supports Beagle as an alternative .

One of the developers of the Gnome software Conduit suggested integrating Tracker into Gnome in early 2007. It was proposed for Gnome 2.18, but only made it into a later version.
