The MetroBlitz was an express local train in South Africa that ran between Johannesburg and Pretoria via Germiston on the Cape Gauge from January 16, 1984 . It was operated by South African Transport Services .

history

From July 1979 the " Jacaranda Express" ( Afrikaans : "Jakarandasnel") ran between Pretoria Station and Johannesburg Park Station as a local train. The travel time for the 69.4 kilometer route was 65 minutes. After nine months, the travel time was reduced to 58 minutes. In 1983 tests were carried out for a higher cruising speed. On January 11, 1984, the MetroBlitz began its service. As of January 16, 1984, the morning journey time from Pretoria to Johannesburg was 42 minutes. The return trip in the afternoon took 44 minutes. The SAR class 12E locomotive was painted gray and had a red belly band and a yellow / red horizontal stripe.

The MetroBlitz reached a travel speed of up to 160 km / h. Poor cost recovery and disruptions caused by slower trains on the same route were given as reasons for discontinuing the MetroBlitzes.

The Gautrain has been operating since June 7, 2012 in 42 minutes between Johannesburg Park Station and Pretoria on standard gauge .
