Metrophanes of Constantinople

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Metrophanes of Constantinople († 326 ) was the first historically proven bishop of Constantinople .

His father Dometius , a brother of the Roman emperor Probus , converted to Christianity and traveled from Rome to Byzantion with two sons, Probus and Metrophanes, due to persecution of Christians . There the three are said to have been taught by the then Bishop Titus and ordained priests. After the death of Titus, first Dometius (272-303) and then his sons Probus (303-315) and Methrophanes (316-324) became bishop of Byzantium.

At the first Council of Nicaea Metrophanes could not attend because of his advanced age. In his place went his deputy and later successor Alexander of Constantinople .

Metrophanes died in 326. His feast day is June 4th .
