The Meyer rock is a rock needle-like cliff in the archipelago of Heard Island and McDonald Islands in the southern Indian Ocean . The rock juts out of the sea 1.5 km northwest of McDonald Island .
Scientists from the British Challenger Expedition (1872–1876) mapped it in 1874 and named it Meyers Rock . This naming was later adapted. It is named after the German captain Johannes Meyer, who sighted the McDonald Islands from his ship La Rochelle in 1875 and three years after his British counterpart William McDonald .
