Miao Dong

Miao Dong ( Chinese  苗 洞 , Pinyin Miáo Dòng ) is the largest known cave space in the world in terms of volume and area. The cavity is part of the Gebihe cave system, which is located in the Ziyun-Getu-He National Park , in the Ziyun Autonomous County of Miao and Bouyei in the Chinese province of Guizhou . The cave chamber is 852 meters long and 191 meters wide with a floor area of ​​154,500 m 2 . In 2013, members of a British expedition surveyed the cave space using a 3-D laser scanner.

Geology and Formation

The cave system was formed 600 million years ago in the Carboniferous and Permian when limestone formed in the sea and the landscape was then slowly lifted out of the sea in the Tertiary and eroded (karst formation).
