Illustration to Pan Tadeusz

Michał Elwiro Andriolli (born November 2, 1836 in Vilnius , † August 23, 1893 in Nałęczów ) was a Polish painter and architect. He is best known for his illustrations of Mickiewicz 's epic poem Pan Tadeusz, as well as for his mansions in suburbs of Warsaw.

Andriolli is a descendant of a family of Italian immigrants who settled in Poland as a result of the Napoleonic wars. Andriolli studied painting and sculpture in Moscow from 1855. He graduated from Petersburg in 1858. On his return to Poland he received a scholarship that allowed him to travel to Rome in 1861, where he continued his studies at the Accademia San Luca . Because of his participation in the January uprising he had to flee Poland and lived first in London and then in Paris. In 1866 he returned to Russian-ruled Poland as an envoy for Polish emigrants. But he was arrested and sentenced to katorga . He was not pardoned until 1871, after which he returned to Warsaw, where he worked as an illustrator for various newspapers. He became one of the most famous Polish illustrators of his time and received several commissions to illustrate the great works of Polish literature. The best known are his illustrations for Pan Tadeusz and Konrad Wallenrod , which were created between 1879 and 1882. Andriolli lived in Paris between 1883 and 1886, where he illustrated French editions of works by Shakespeare and James Fenimore Cooper .

He spent the last years of his life in a small villa near Anielin on the Świder River near Warsaw. Aside from his own villa, he also received commissions for the design of other villas, developing a characteristic architectural style known as Świdermajer, which shaped several Warsaw suburbs.
