Michael John Basman (born March 16, 1946 in St. Pancras , London ) is an English chess player.

Life

With the English national team he took part in the 1968 Chess Olympiad in Lugano. He got 6.5 points from 11 games on the second reserve board (+5 = 3 -3). Michael Basman, whose father came from Armenia, lived in Yerevan in the early 1970s and won the city championship there. He was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE in 1980 .

Basman is known for his unorthodox opening treatment , he often plays variants like the St. George Defense or Grob's Attack . He is the author of several books on these openings.
