Michael Bates, Baron Bates (born May 26, 1961 in Gateshead ) is a British politician ( Conservative Party ) and a member of the House of Lords .

Life

Bates worked as a junior partner in an insurance agency from 1979 to 1983 , after which he worked as an auditor and consultant in various investment companies. In 1984 he joined the Young Conservatives . Between 1991 and 1997 he was a member of the House of Commons for the Langbaurgh district for the Conservative Party . From 1992 to 1994, Bates served as the private parliamentary secretary, first for Secretary of State Nicholas Scott, then at John Wheeler's Northern Ireland office . 1995/96 was Lord Commissioner of the Treasury , 1996/97 Paymaster General . After leaving Parliament, Bates went back into business.

On June 30, 2008, he became life peer as Baron Bates , of Langbaurgh in the County of North Yorkshire . He is vice chairman of the Tories . From 2008 to 2010 he was shadow minister in various cabinets, 2009/10 whip of the opposition . Until 2008 he was married to Carole Whitfield, with whom he has two sons, in 2012 he married Xuelin Li. He lives near Durham .

On January 31, 2018, Bates announced his resignation as Minister for International Development after being late for a meeting at the House of Lords . The resignation was not accepted by the Prime Minister Theresa May .
