Michael Cole (psychologist)

Michael Cole (born April 13, 1938 in Los Angeles ) is an American psychologist and professor at the University of California, San Diego . His focus is on research into cognitive development and mediation of cognitive abilities in humans.

Cole grew up in Los Angeles, where he attended Fairfax High School. In 1955 he enrolled at Oberlin College , Ohio, in psychology. In 1957 he first moved to the University of California, Berkeley and then to the University of California, Los Angeles, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1959. He received his PhD from Indiana University in 1962 with a grant from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation . In 1981 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
