Michael Fritsch (2015)

Michael Fritsch (* 1951 in Berlin ) is Professor of Economics (Chair for Corporate Development, Innovation and Economic Change) at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . He is also research professor at the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) and associate editor of the scientific journals Regional Studies and Small Business Economics .

Career

Michael Fritsch studied economics at the Technical University of Berlin and graduated in 1977 with a degree in economics. He then worked as a research assistant or research associate at the Institute for Economics at the TU Berlin. There he received his doctorate in economics (Dr. rer. Oec.) In 1982 and qualified as a professor in 1989 in economics. From 1990 to 1992 Michael Fritsch was a representative of the chair for economic policy, in particular regulatory and structural policy at the Technical University in Berlin. Subsequently, in autumn 1992, he took over the chair for economic policy at the Faculty of Economics at the Technical University of Bergakademie Freiberg. From 1994 to 2005 he was also the managing director of the “Research Center for Innovation Economics ”, a joint institution of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the Fraunhofer Institute for System Technology and Innovation Research (ISI-Karlsruhe) . In 2006 Fritsch moved to the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena to take the chair for corporate development, innovation and economic change. After retiring in spring 2018, he continues to work there.

Michael Fritsch's research focuses on entrepreneurship and innovation . In the area of ​​entrepreneurship, he primarily deals with the determinants of start-up activities and the effects of business start-ups on economic development . In the field of innovation research, research focuses on the functioning of regional innovation systems , in particular on cooperative collaboration within the framework of innovation processes. In this context, Michael Fritsch also analyzed the importance of universities in regional innovation systems. Further works by Michael Fritsch deal with the market failure as a reason for state intervention as well as with the importance of artistic-creative activities on economic development.

More recent works analyze the importance of knowledge, entrepreneurial independence and cultural factors in the context of long-term regional development paths.

Works

Fritsch is the author of more than 15 books and extensive studies and has written more than 130 articles in scientific journals and more than 140 articles in edited volumes. He was the editor of more than 20 books and special issues of scientific journals. His textbook “Market Failure and Economic Policy” is now in its 10th edition.
