Michael Haefliger (born May 2, 1961 in West Berlin ) is a Swiss director . He is the director of the Lucerne Festival .

Life

Michael Haefliger, born in West Berlin in 1961 as the son of the Swiss tenor Ernst Haefliger , studied violin at the New York Juilliard School of Music with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy Delay from 1978 to 1983 . At the University of Economics, Law and Social Sciences at the University of St. Gallen , he continued his training in management and completed it as an “Executive MBA”. A scholarship later enabled him to attend the General Manager Program at Harvard University in Massachusetts. Michael Haefliger initially pursued a solo career as a concert violinist, which led him to festivals in Lucerne, Interlaken and Spoleto, among others. In 1986 he was one of the co-founders of the “Young Artists in Concert” festival in Davos, which he was director until 1998. In addition, from 1996 to 1998 he was the artistic director of the Collegium Novum Zurich program , where he carried out a retrospective of Sofia Gubaidulina's work and the cycles “Music from USA” and “Vienna x 3”.

On January 1, 1999, Michael Haefliger took up the post of artistic director of the Lucerne Festival , which at that time still operated under the name of the "International Lucerne Music Festival". Since then he has provided numerous new impulses and expanded the annual program of the three festivals at Easter, in summer and at the piano. He pays particular attention to contemporary music , which is also accentuated by the obligation of annual composers-in-residence ; With the appointment of “artistes étoile”, outstanding performers have the opportunity every summer to make their program appearances. With Claudio Abbado he founded the “Lucerne Festival Orchestra”, with Pierre Boulez the “Lucerne Festival Academy”. In addition, he established international circles of friends abroad, including in the USA and Japan. Haefliger was also a member of the “Salle Modulable” foundation board. The construction of this additional hall, which he requested, was rejected by the Lucerne cantonal parliament in 2016.

In January 2000, the World Economic Forum Davos named Michael Haefliger “Global Leader of Tomorrow”. In 2003 he was awarded the European Culture Innovation Prize and in 2007 the Tourism Award of the «Tourism Forum Lucerne». In 2013/2014 he was awarded the Central Switzerland Culture Prize , the award of the “Swiss Society of New York” and the Badge of Honor from the City of Lucerne .

Michael Haefliger is an alumnus of the “Juilliard School of Music” New York, the University of St. Gallen and the “Harvard Business School”.
