Michael Harrington (born January 24, 1986 in Greenville ) is an American football player who is mostly used as a defender . He is currently under contract with Chicago Fire .

Career

Youth and amateur football

Harrington studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , where he also played for his university's college team, the North Carolina Tar Heels. During his time in college, he also played for the Raleigh CASl Elite in the Premier Development League .

Club career

Harrington was chosen as the third pick in the first round of the 2007 MLS SuperDrafts by Sporting Kansas City . After six years with Kansas City, he was transferred to the Portland Timbers in exchange for an unknown transfer fee . For the 2015 season, Harrington moved to the Colorado Rapids for one year .

In January 2016, he signed a contract with Chicago Fire .

National team

Harrington was part of the squad for the U-17 World Cup in Finland in 2003 where the USA team reached the quarter-finals. So far, he has not been able to complete an assignment for the senior national team.
