Michael Kies
Michael Kies (born September 26, 1960 in Karlsruhe , † 2004 ) was a German wrestler .
Life
Athletic career
Kies competed in his first competition at the beginning of 1978 at the Palatinate Championships, where he was Vice Palatinate Champion.
Kies was discovered by the German light heavyweight champion Fred Theobald . This instructed him in January 1978 at ASV Pirmasens 90 in the basics of ring sports. In 1979 he became a member of the selection team of the Palatinate Association against a team from the United States in California. Shortly afterwards Michael Kies won the German championship in the junior super heavyweight division .
The successes of Kies were also registered by the then national coach Heinz Ostermann , who appointed him to the C-squad of the German Wrestling Federation (DRB). Kies qualified for the Greek-Roman style Junior World Championships in August 1979 .
In 1980, Kies moved to VfK Schifferstadt for professional reasons .
After he had already taken third (1981) and twice second (1982 and 1983) place, Kies finally won the German super heavyweight championship in the Greco-Roman style in 1984.
Michael Kies remained active in various clubs in the following years, but was also unable to build on earlier successes due to injury.
Private
Kies was a trained businessman and was seen in several TV advertising productions, for example for Disney. In 1981 the city of Schifferstadt awarded the athlete the plaque of honor for special merits.
Michael Kies was married twice and had three children, two of them from his first marriage. He died in 2004 due to serious health problems caused by heart failure.
