Carl von Gützkow (* 1757 in Western Pomerania ; † March 7, 1838 ) was a Swedish and Prussian officer .

Origin and family

Priesdorff names Western Pomerania as the place of birth, but the von Gützkow family there was mentioned for the last time in 1608 in Anklam . A relationship to the August 23, 1780 in Vienna in the kingdom nobility upscale Royal Danish captain Christoph Dietrich von Gütschow called Gützkow which the estate until 1788 Levetzow in Grevesmühlen near the Swedish city also Wismar had, appears spatially and temporally likely. A descent from a branch postulated by Ledebur that has become Swedish, of the first named von Gützkowin any case has so far lacked any evidence. Nothing is known about a marriage or descendants either.

Life

Gützkow entered Swedish service in 1775, advanced to the rank of lieutenant in 1780, captain in 1790, major in the Engelbrechten infantry regiment in 1806 and lieutenant colonel in 1813. He had already distinguished himself in the Finnish War , for which he was appointed Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sword on May 4, 1810 . After taking part in the Wars of Liberation on the Swedish side in 1813/1814, he was promoted to colonel in 1814.

On December 28, 1815 he changed to Prussian service; In October 1815 the previous Swedish Pomerania was transferred to Prussia. On January 30, 1816, however, he was given the character of a major general and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class retired.

King Friedrich Wilhelm III. When saying goodbye, asked Gützkow to take over the management of the school for soldiers' children in Stralsund . Gützkow complied with this request.
