Michael Riekenberg

Michael Riekenberg (born November 30, 1953 in Hanover ) is a historian of the history of Latin America. He published works on the culture of remembrance and the history of violence in Latin America.

Life

Riekenberg received his doctorate in 1984 from the University of Hanover , in 1994 he completed his habilitation at the Catholic University of Eichstätt with a thesis on the history of culture in the La Plata region in the 19th century. Since 1995 he has been Professor of Comparative History and Ibero-American History at the University of Leipzig . He lived in Guatemala for several years , where he a. a. did research in the General Archives (Archiv General de Centro América). He temporarily represented the professorship for modern and contemporary history at the Catholic University of Eichstätt . He was also a visiting professor at the Universidad de Buenos Aires and the Universidad Católica in Santiago de Chile and gave numerous lectures at universities in Latin America.

Riekenberg's book State- remote violence. A History of Latin America (1500-1930) was honored by the “International Humanities” jury in April 2015 and was also published in Spanish and English. It is considered a standard work on the past and present of violence in Latin America. In the book Violence. An Ontology (2019), Riekenberg elaborates a general theory of violence based on the consideration of Amazonian cultures.
