Ibero America

Ibero America and the Iberian Peninsula

Ibero America is a term that has been used since the second half of the 19th century for those countries on the American continent that were formerly colonies of Spain or Portugal .

Spain and Portugal itself are included in some derived names, for example: Iberoamerican Summit , Organization of Iberoamerican States or Organización de Telecomunicaciones de Iberoamérica (a TV network, see also OTI Festival ).

The term avoids the Latin part of the word in order to more precisely match the variants of the languages Spanish and Portuguese spoken in North , Central and South America . He also emphasized the traditional ties with the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), which remained close in the political , economic and cultural fields . Above all, this term solves the misunderstanding of the term Latin America : The French-speaking areas in America are usually not included in Latin America, although French is a Romance language .

Since the 1990s, on the initiative of Spain's King Juan Carlos , these states have founded a number of organizations to officially coordinate their cooperation. Some hold conferences - sometimes annually or biennially, sometimes as needed.
