Hans-Joachim Koenig

Hans-Joachim König (born February 11, 1941 in Herford ) is a German historian . From 1988 to 2006 he was professor for the history of Latin America at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt .

biography

König completed a degree in history, Spanish and Latin at the University of Münster and the University of Hamburg . In Hamburg he completed his doctorate in 1969 and his habilitation in 1984 . After initially working as a research assistant at the History Department of the University of Hamburg (1970/1971 and 1973 to 1984) and as a senior scientific advisor at the Research Center for European Expansion at the University of Bamberg (1984 to 1988), he took over the newly established chair for history in 1988 Latin America of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and at the same time became co-director of the Central Institute for Latin American Studies (ZILAS) there. At the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt he was Vice Dean and Dean of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences and a member of the Senate. König took on visiting professorships at Argentinian, Chilean, Colombian and Mexican universities. He has also been named a Corresponding Member of the Academies for the History of Chile (1991) and Colombia (1996). From 1999 to 2008 he was a member of the Presidium of the Asociación de Historiadores Latinoamericanistas Europeos (AHILA) , from 1999 to 2002 as its vice-president, from 2002 to 2005 as its president and then as an assessor. He has been retired since April 2006.

König was and is co-editor of various series, magazines and encyclopedias, including americana eystettensia, HISTORAMERICANA, the yearbook for the history of Latin America, the encyclopedia of modern times and the encyclopedia of modern times Online.

The focus of his research and publications is primarily on the problems of European conquest and colonization in America and their long-term effects, the processes of state and nation-building in Latin America , especially in Colombia, as well as the importance and function of historiography for social processes in Latin America .

König's students have and held professorships in Leipzig ( Michael Riekenberg ), Erfurt ( Peer Schmidt †) and Berlin ( Stefan Rinke ) as well as in numerous Latin American countries.

From 2006 to 2014, König was the first chairman of the Friends of the Evangelical Academy Tutzing e. V., which is dedicated to adult education throughout Bavaria; since 1998 he has been part of the management team of the local Friends of Ingolstadt.
