Michael Roaf

Michael Douglas Roaf (born May 20, 1947 in Oxford , England) is a British archaeologist from the Near East .

Michael D. Roaf first studied mathematics at the University of Oxford . After studying archeology of West Asia at University College London , he received his doctorate in Oxford in 1977 with the dissertation Sculptures and Sculptors at Persepolis . From 1981 to 1985 he headed the British School of Archeology in Iraq before becoming a professor at the University of California, Berkeley . From 1995 to 2012 he was Professor of Near Eastern Archeology and Director of the Department for Cultural Studies and Classical Studies at the University of Munich . After his retirement in 2012, he again represented the professorship at the Munich institute in the 2012/2013 winter semester.

His early research focus was in particular the archeology of Iran . Roaf participated in excavations in Iran, Iraq , Syria , Turkey and in Bahrain . He was deputy director of the excavation excavation in the Median settlement of Nush-i Jan . He is currently working in Giricano and Ziyaret Tepe in Turkey.
