Michael Shire
Michael Shire (* approx. 1958 in Birmingham ) is an English rabbi , university teacher, religious scholar and non-fiction author.
Life
Michael Shire studied Hebrew Language and Literature from 1978 to 1981 at University College London, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with Honors. From 1981 to 1983 he continued his studies at the Hebrew Union College in New York and graduated with a Masters in Religious Education. At the Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles , he received his doctorate from 1983 to 1986 as a Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Education. He then worked until 1991 at the Temple Beth Hillel Synagogue in Valley Village, Los Angeles, as Director of Education.
From 1991 to 1993 Shire did his Masters in Jewish and Judaic Studies at Leo Baeck College in London and was ordained a rabbi there in 1996 after further studies . He took up teaching there until 2001. In 2001 he became Vice President of Leo Baeck College and has been Professor of Jewish Education at the Hebrew College in Boston and Dean of the Shoolman Graduate School of Jewish Education since 2011 .
Shire belongs to Reform Judaism and built up the teacher training in the sense of Reform Judaism in England, which has also had an impact on other countries in Europe. His wife Marcia Plumb is a rabbi and they both have two children.
