Michael William Eysenck (born February 8, 1944 ) is a British psychologist . He is a professor at Royal Holloway, University of London .

His research is mainly concerned with the cognitive factors of fear. In the late 1990s he developed the hedonic tone theory (see Hedonistic Treadmill ), in which he postulated that humans are genetically intent on maintaining an optimal level of pleasant arousal at all times.

He is the son of the German-British psychologist Hans Jürgen Eysenck and his wife Sybil Eysenck and thus a grandson of the Jewish violinist Max Rostal .
