Michael Wiescher

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael CF Wiescher (* 1949 in Wuppertal ) is a German-American experimental physicist who deals with nuclear astrophysics .

life and work

Wiescher studied after graduating from high school in 1969 in Münchberg at the University of Münster , where he obtained his diploma (in solid-state physics) in 1975 and obtained his doctorate in 1980 on fusion processes in massive stars (summa cum laude) under Claus Rolfs ( Measurement of the Reactions in the CNO cylces ). As a post-doc he was at Ohio State University (1981-1983), the University of Mainz (1984-1986 with Karl-Ludwig Kratz ) and at Caltech (Kellogg Laboratory 1984). From 1986 he was at the University of Notre Dame , where he is Freiman's Professor of Physics. He is the director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA) at Notre Dame University, Michigan State University, and the University of Chicago . He is also an adjunct professor at Michigan State University and the University of Surrey .

He experimentally studies important nuclear reaction rates for astrophysics (such as supernovae and novae , X-ray bursts, the formation of neutron stars and energy generation in stars, for example AGB stars ) and is the author of over 250 research articles (2009). He is also involved in the planning of new accelerators especially for investigations in nuclear astrophysics, especially for the investigation of nuclear reactions and nuclear structure cores far from the stable areas.

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Humboldt Society. In 2003 he received the Hans A. Bethe Prize . He has been an external member of the Academia Europaea since 2017 .

In addition, he wrote local historical writings about his place of birth Wuppertal.
