Lewin is particularly known for his crime novels about the private detective Albert Samson, which are set in Indianapolis and are clearly inspired by the hard school of American crime novels. Like his role models, Lewin shows in his microcosms how interweaving of failed interpersonal and family relationships can lead to misfortune. However, while the plot and setting reflect the typical detective novel , the laconic, sometimes black and humorous narrative style adds a new facet to the genre, which especially gives the figure of the slightly bumbling Albert Samson character depth.

Lewin has published 18 novels since his debut Ask the right question (1971) , as well as a number of short stories, radio plays and plays. He was nominated three times for the prestigious Edgar Award , including 1972 for Ask the right question . In 1992, the Raymond Chandler Society (Germany) eV honored him with the “Marlowe” in the “Best Detective Novel - International” category for his novel Called by a Panther . The English-language original edition was rated, not the German translation.
