Michaelisviertel (Braunschweig)
The Michaelisviertel is a district and a traditional island in the old town of Braunschweig . It surrounds the eponymous Michaeliskirche . The quarter is located on the southwestern edge of the medieval city limits in what is now the city center .
The Michaelisviertel is one of the few contiguous areas of the old town that survived the Second World War. In addition, it was supplemented by a few reconstructions such as the Michaelishof.
In the Michaelisviertel are u. a. Remains of the fortifications , such as the Neustadtmühlengraben , a remnant piece of the city wall on Prinzenweg , a defense tower and archaeological remains of a wall tower, the so-called St. Michaelisburg, on the site of today's Stobwasserhaus in Echternstraße .
