The Church of Archangel Michael ( Ukrainian Церква Святого Архистратига Михаїла , also Carmelite Church ) is a Greek Catholic Church in downtown Lviv , Ukraine .

history

In 1613 a monastery of the Discalced Carmelites was built here , initially made of wood. The church was first mentioned in 1634. During this time it was built as a stone church, which was consecrated in 1644. The church and monastery were damaged during the Khmelnytskyi Uprising in 1648 and the Northern War in 1704. In 1731/32 the baroque frescoes on the ceiling and wall representations were made.

In 1781 the Order of the Discalced Carmelites had to leave the monastery and went to Zagórze . In 1794 the monastery was handed over to the Reformate order and in 1789 to the shod Carmelites . Construction of the towers began between 1835 and 1839, and was completed in 1906 after renovation work.

In 1945 the monastery was closed and the monks went to Kraków . The facility was used as a warehouse and was part of the city's natural science and technology museum. In the 1960s and 70s it was a meeting place for the alternative youth scene, where concerts were also held. Since 1980 the complex has been restored.

In 1991 the monastery was handed over to the Greek Catholic Church, which gave it to the Order of the Studites .

architecture

The church is a baroque three-aisled building without apses. Since the monastery was part of the city's fortifications, it was built to be particularly fortified. The ceiling frescoes from 1731/32 and the wall paintings with depictions of the history of the Carmelite Order are worth seeing. The black marble altar is probably from the time it was built around 1640. The two towers were designed from 1835 to 1839 and completed in 1906 after renovations.
