Studitenorden

The Studitenorden ( order abbreviation : MSU for M onaci S tuditi U craini) is a modern Ukrainian Catholic monastic community , which is mainly anchored in western Ukraine and has the Univ'ska Lavra as its center.

history

The history of the order has its roots in the Typikon by Theodor Studites , which was written for the studio monastery and represented an extension of the monastic rule of Basilius . The Typikon was brought to Ukraine by the Greek monk Mykhailo in 1073 . Theodosius of Petchersk spread it, which made it adopted by all monasteries in Kievan Rus . However, due to some historical circumstances, this tradition was lost.

Due to the strong Latinization in the Order of the Basilians of St. Josaphat , at that time the only monastic order in Ukraine , wanted the Metropolitan of Lemberg , Andrej Scheptyzkyj (1865–1944), to renew the Eastern monastic tradition after Theodor Studites . The immediate reason for the establishment of the Studi tenor Dens was, however, that many farmers formed themselves into spontaneous prayer groups, with the desire for a religious life, but because of poverty not in the Order of St. Basilian. Jehoshaphat could enter (a dowry was necessary).

The first monastery of the modern order of students was founded in Sknyliv in 1904 . The rule of the order, which dates from 1906, is deliberately based on the Eastern church monastic tradition of St. Theodor Studites.

After the Ukrainian Catholic Church was forcibly incorporated into the Russian Orthodox Church in 1946, the student congregations could only continue to exist in emigration . This changed in 1990 when the Ukrainian Catholic Church was reconstituted.

Today the Studitenorden has its center in Lviv. The best-known member of the order is the Ukrainian Grand Archbishop Lyubomyr Husar , who died in 2017 and who headed the Order of Students from 1977 to 1991.

Apostolate

The Ukrainian Order of Students is particularly committed to the apostolate of catechesis and educational work for children and young people. In addition, every year children and young people from Chernobyl are admitted to the retreat house in Yaremcha . The other activities of the order include animal husbandry, beekeeping and herbalism. The publishing of religious literature and also the management of a workshop for ecclesiastical and sacred art.

Daily life in the Studite Order is characterized by eight hours of prayer, eight hours of work and eight hours of relaxation.
