The Michaelskirche in Wangen

The Protestant Michaelskirche Wangen is one of the oldest churches in Stuttgart and is dedicated to the Archangel Michael .

history

Built around 1250 as a small fortified church in Wangen , the church was first mentioned in a document in 1275. It shows the transition from the Romanesque to the early Gothic style of construction and perhaps stands in the place of an old wooden building or even a pre-Christian place of worship.

The church

Outside

While the nave was raised by various alterations and the southern annex was added, the tower has retained its original shape, with the exception of the upper storey, which was only added after the Thirty Years' War (17th century). The loopholes on the first floor still bear witness to its purpose as a refuge in the event of attacks. On the second floor, the window openings on the outside have early Gothic tracery, while on the eastern side a column in the Romanesque style has been preserved. Around the church was the old churchyard, which also served as a cemetery, shielded by the defensive wall that was still preserved. This led to stairs on the mountain side. Originally the only access from above was the narrow Rohracker Törle, intended for the residents of Rohracker to Sillenbuch who were parish here until 1447.

Inside

The interior owes its current appearance entirely to the renovation in 1903, only the late Gothic font from 1497, the work of the stonemason Stephan Waid , who worked on the Esslingen Frauenkirche and the St. Ulrich Church , is old . Also noteworthy is the heavily darkened resurrection picture from 1721. In the choir, only the two consoles with romantic palmettes that support the ribs of the originally low vault have survived. The wall and wood paintings were renovated in 1999.

The tower figure

Halfway up the tower, an artless, now heavily weathered figure has been carved out, hardly depicting a craftsman falling during construction, but the Archangel Michael, who hovers over the dead, looking to the east.
