Curt Kuhl

Curt Eduard Karl Kuhl (born December 28, 1890 in Graudenz ; † March 13, 1959 in Kassel ) was a doctor of the German theologian (Old Testament scholar and archaeologist).

biography

Kuhl was born in 1890 as the son of a garrison administration inspector in the fortress Graudenz, 2 kilometers north of the town of the same name. He attended the Friedrich Wilhelm-Realgymnasium in Stettin , and from 1900 the Lessing-Gymnasium in Berlin . From 1905 to 1909 he was at the Royal High School in Bromberg . He then studied Protestant theology at the universities of Breslau , Bonn and Halle and received his exam in Breslau in 1913. After having worked as an assistant vicar for six months, he volunteered for the Schleswig-Holstein Pioneer Battalion No. 9 . In 1917 he wrote his dissertation The literary unit of the book Ezekiel at the philosophical faculty of the University of Tübingen .

First World War

From October 1, 1913 to August 1, 1914, Kuhl served as a one-year volunteer with Pioneer Battalion No. 9, which was stationed in Harburg. During this time he was promoted to surplus private on May 1, 1914 and to non-commissioned officer on August 1, 1914. With the outbreak of World War I and general mobilization, Kuhl stayed in his battalion. The Engineer Battalion 9 became part of the 33rd Reserve Infantry Brigade, which in turn was part of the 17th Reserve Division , which was initially used on the Belgian front. Kuhl was involved in the street fighting in Leuven on August 26, 1914 and in the recapture of Werchter on August 27, 1914. On September 4, 1914, the division took Dendermonde and Kwatrecht (near Wetteren ). From August 15 to 19, 1914 they took part in the Battle of Noyon , whereupon Kuhl was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. October 16, 1914 to March 7, 1915, the battalion position fighting was to the west part of Roye-Noyon, during which Kuhl on 21 October 1914 surplus sergeant , November 5, 1914 Offizierstellvertreter , on December 5 at the highest cabinet order to Promoted Lieutenant of the Reserve . On November 4, Kuhl suffered a tear in his eardrum as a result of a blast in Beuvraignes , but remained with the company. On March 8, 1915, Kuhl came to Pioneer Company No. 107, which fought in the newly formed 54th Division . Initially, the division was still used for trench warfare on the western front after the winter battle in Champagne and Kuhl fought from March 29 to July 13 at Perthes . The relocation to the Eastern Front took place in mid-July , beginning with the Battle of the Narew from July 24, 1915 to August 3, 1915 as part of the Narew offensive . Other combat participations on the Eastern Front were:

  • August 13th to 18th --- Pursuit battles on the upper Narew and Nurzec

  • August 26th to September 5th --- Chase battles on Swislocz and Naumka-Werecia
  • September 6-16 --- Persecution from Nyemen to Berezina

The division was then moved back to the Western Front, where Kuhl was stationed from October 10 to December 10, 1915 during trench warfare in Moulins on the Aisne. Because of a catarrh of the lungs, Kuhl was taken to the "Heiliger Karl" military hospital in Chauny on December 11th . He was then transferred to the Harburg reserve hospital on January 14, 1916, from where he was transferred to a military convalescent home in Wyk auf Föhr on March 9, 1916, where he stayed until June 7, 1916. From June 8 to 20, 1916, he was initially assigned to the Pioneer Replacement Battalion 2. From August 10, 1916 to January 15, 1917 he worked as a teacher in a waiting camp. On June 21, 1917, Kuhl was transferred as a company commander to Pioneer Field Recruits Depot 11, according to an order of the Deputy General Command of the V Army Corps .

Weimar Republic

Kuhl married the pastor's daughter Emma Drabek on January 11, 1921 in Pless and took up his first pastor's position in Schlawa , Silesia , in the same year . In 1924 he moved to Suhl . In the mid-twenties he was doing archaeological research in Palestine, the results of which he published in the Palestine Yearbook in 1928/30. In 1928 he was elected pastor of the Protestant parish in Berlin-Frohnau . In the 1930s, he was in charge of the planning and construction of St. John's Church . When the church was inaugurated in 1936, however, since his strong commitment to the German Christians had led to conflicts with the community, he had accepted a pastorate at the Petrikirche .

Second World War

Kuhl had been a member of the NSDAP and the SA since 1933 . He participated in the institute for research and elimination of the Jewish influence on German church life . In 1939 he qualified as a professor at Berlin University for the subject of the Old Testament. From 1939 he did military service and remained a prisoner of war until 1948. During this time he was among other things a member of the Herald .

post war period

Later residences were Nordkirchen , where he was pastor from 1949 to 1956. Here he founded a church building association in order to be able to create a community center in Nordkirchen. In 1956, he was of the Protestant Theological Faculty of the University of Bonn , the honorary doctorate awarded. After Kuhl retired in 1957, he lived in Kassel until his death in 1959, leaving behind a wife and two children. In the last years of his life he had a teaching position at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . From 1958 he worked with Bo Reicke on the biblical-historical concise dictionary for the Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht publishing house . Kuhl was a member of the German Oriental Society from 1921 until his death .
