Postnikow was a specialist in algebraic topology and differential topology. He did his doctorate with Lev Pontryagin at Lomonossow University , where he was also a professor. In the 1990s he was at the University of Oklahoma .

In 1951 he introduced Postnikov systems for path-related spaces, with which topological spaces and their homology groups can be constructed from their homotopy groups.

Sergei Petrovich Novikov is one of his doctoral students .

Like Fomenko , he dealt with chronological criticism .
