Michel Jarraud (* 1952 in Châtillon-sur-Indre ) is a French meteorologist and was Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization WMO from 2004 to 2015 .

Life

Jarraud was elected Secretary General of the WMO at the fourteenth World Meteorological Congress (May 5–24, 2003) and held the office from January 1, 2004. After two re-elections, he handed it over to Petteri Taalas on January 1, 2016 .

Michel Jarraud became Deputy Secretary General in January 1995 after previously working for other meteorological institutions. In 1991 Jarraud was appointed Deputy Director of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ECMWF . Jarraud began his career as a meteorologist in 1976 as a researcher with the French national weather service Météo-France . From 1986 to 1989 he was director of the weather forecast department.

Jarraud is married and has two children.
