Petteri Taalas

Petteri Taalas (born 1961) is a Finnish meteorologist . He has been Michel Jarraud's successor as General Secretary of the World Weather Organization (WMO) since 2016 .

Life

Taalas received his PhD in meteorology from Helsinki University in 1993 . He also completed a management degree at the Helsinki University of Commerce . From 2007 to 2015 he was the head of the Meteorological Institute in Finland.

Act

Taalas is seen as a warning for swift action against climate change . In 2018 he said: “Without a reduction in CO 2 and other greenhouse gases , climate change will have devastating and irreversible consequences for the earth. [...] The chance to intervene is almost wasted. "
