Michel Nowak

Michel Nowak (born June 30, 1962 in Annaba , today Algeria ) is a former French judoka . He won an Olympic bronze medal in 1984.

Athletic career

Nowak was third in 1978 at the European Cadet Championships and in 1979 third in the European Junior Championships. In 1980 he won his first French championship, in the same year he was also junior European champion. In 1981 he won both titles again. At the European Championships in 1981 , he finished fifth. In 1982 he was French champion for the third time.

Michel Nowak won the French championship again in 1984 after a year without major tournament success. At the European Championships in Liège he was defeated early on by the Briton Neil Adams , but fought his way to the bronze medal with three wins in the hope round. In Los Angeles at the Olympic judo tournament he lost to Adams in the quarter-finals, with victories over the Dutchman Rob Henneveld and the Yugoslav Filip Leščak, Nowak won the bronze medal. 1985 Nowak won again at the French championships. At the European Championships in Hamar , he lost in the quarterfinals against Vladimir Shestakov from the Soviet Union, but won a bronze medal in the hope round. In 1986 he won the French championship again.

The 1.75 m tall Nowak had fought in the light middleweight division up to 78 kilograms until 1986, in 1987 he switched to the middleweight division up to 86 kilograms. At the French championships in 1988 he lost in the final against Arnaud Perrier , at the Olympic Games in 1988 Fabien Canu competed for France.
