Michipicoten Island is an island in the northeastern part of Lake Superior . It belongs to the Thunder Bay District of the Canadian province of Ontario .
It is located 175 km northwest of Sault Ste. Marie and 65 km southwest of Wawa .
The third largest island in Lake Superior is 27 km long and up to 10 km wide. The island is uninhabited.
Michipicoten Island has large populations of beavers , forest caribou and birds. The island is a destination for adventure kayakers . The closest distance to mainland Ontario is 16 km. The entire island is located in Michipicoten Island Provincial Park , which is administered by Ontario Parks .
Michipicoten Island consists of ancient lava rock that results from the volcanism of the Midcontinent Rift System . It is heavily forested with several inland lakes.
In 1912 a lighthouse was built on the eastern tip of the island.
The island was named "Isle Maurepas" on old maps - after the French naval minister Jean-Frédéric Phélypeaux, comte de Maurepas .
