John Michael Bednarek is an American military officer and former officer in the United States Army . He was director of the United States Office of Security Cooperation in Iraq and former commander of the First United States Army . Bednarek took command of the 1st Army on April 6, 2011, as the successor to Lieutenant General Thomas G. Miller and handed it over to Major General Kevin R. Wendel on an interim basis on March 14, 2013 , who was finally Lieutenant General on August 2, 2013 Michael S. Tucker followed.

Career

Bednarek graduated from Old Dominion University and trained in the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps . Afterwards he commanded units at all levels of the army, from platoons to army command. Bednarek was also Chief of the Training Group in the Joint Warfighting Center, Chief of the Operations Group in the Joint Readiness Training Center, and Commander of the 4th Training Brigade. In June 2008 Bednarek was given command of the East Division and on April 6, 2011, supreme command of the United States First Army . He held this command until March 14, 2013, when he was appointed commander of the Office of Security Cooperation (OSC) in Iraq. In this position, Bednarek was the highest-ranking US military personnel stationed in Iraq and was involved in the fight against the Islamic State . Bednarek also graduated from Troy University , where he earned an MS in Human Resource Management, from US Army Command and General Staff College, and US Army War College . Bednarek retired from active service on June 24, 2015.

During his service, Bednarek received the Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaves, the Defense Superior Service Medal , the Legion of Merit with four-fold oak leaves, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal with five-fold oak leaves.
