( Herrich-Schäffer , 1839)

Microdynerus exilis is a hymenoptera from the family of the wasps (Vespidae).

features

The animals reach a body length of 6 to 7.5 millimeters. In the female, the first tergite is roughly dotted and colored black on the sides, which distinguishes it from the females of the similar Microdynerus timidus , whose tergite is colored red on the sides. The male has a scapus colored yellow below and the tibia of the front legs are brown behind. It is very difficult to distinguish the species from Microdynerus nugdunensis .

Occurrence

The species occurs in southern and central Europe, north to northern Germany. It colonizes dry and temperature-favored, open habitats with sandy soils. The animals fly from late May to early August. The species is widespread in Central Europe.

Way of life

The nest is created in hollow stems of blackberries or in abandoned beetle bores, which are usually a little over two millimeters in diameter. The cell walls are made from pulp mixed with sand. The brood is likely supplied with larvae of weevils (Curculionidae). The species is parasitized by Chrysis gracillima .
