MTOC stands for microtubule organizing center (microtubule organizing center). In most cells , microtubules grow from a limited number of starting points. MTOCs are the locations in the cell where microtubules begin to grow in vivo .
There are several MTOC types. The centrioles, for example, as well as the basal bodies ( cilia and flagella arise from them ) consist of a characteristic arrangement of nine microtubule triplets (9 × 3 + 0).
In most animal cells, polar microtubules with their minus end are anchored in a complex structure, the centrosome .
